Photo Extender: Make One Photo Fit Every Format with AI Outpainting

You have a photo you want to use, but the frame is wrong. A portrait needs to become a wide banner. A product shot needs more space around it. A wallpaper crops out the part you wanted to keep.

Cropping can remove important details, and stretching can distort the subject. Photo Extender offers another approach: use AI outpainting to generate background beyond the original edges.

What Photo Extender does

Photo Extender is a browser-based tool for expanding an existing photo into a wider or taller composition. Instead of asking you to write a detailed prompt, it gives you a focused workflow: upload an image, choose a target aspect ratio, and select where to add space.

The AI generates new background detail based on the surrounding scene. That makes it useful when you like the photo itself and need a different frame for it.

Three ways to put it to work

Turn a portrait into a banner. A 4:5 photo may work well in a feed but feel cramped in a 16:9 layout. Extending the sides gives you a wider composition and can create room for a headline you add afterward.

Give product photos more breathing room. A tightly framed product image can be awkward to reuse across storefronts, promotional graphics, and square layouts. Expanding the background gives you more flexibility when arranging the finished design.

Make a photo fit your wallpaper. A landscape photo often loses important details when cropped to a tall phone screen. Extending the canvas toward a 9:16 format can help it fit while keeping more of the original composition visible.

How to extend your first photo

  1. Upload an image. Use a JPG, PNG, or WebP file up to 4 MB.
  2. Pick the target shape. Choose 1:1, 4:5, 16:9, 9:16, or 21:9, or enter a custom ratio.
  3. Choose the extension direction. Use Both sides, Start, or End to control where the extra space goes.
  4. Generate, review, and download. Generation typically takes about 60–120 seconds, although timing can vary. Check the new edges before using the result.

There is no desktop software to install, and you can try the tool without creating an account. Downloads have no watermark.

A few tips for better results

Start with a clear image, and choose the ratio for the place you actually plan to use it. A modest extension around a simple sky or wall is a sensible first experiment; a large expansion around complex architecture asks the model to invent much more.

Look closely at repeated patterns, straight lines, shadows, and the boundary between the original image and the generated area. For product images, check that the product's shape, label, and other important details still look right.

Outpainting creates plausible new content. It does not recover what was actually outside the camera frame. Treat the result as an edited image, especially when factual accuracy matters.

Free to try, with optional credits

Photo Extender offers a free trial without sign-up. A free account provides daily credits, subject to usage limits. Each successful generation uses 5 credits, and optional one-time credit packs are available if you need more. No subscription is required.

Images are uploaded and sent to an AI processing partner to generate the extension; processing does not happen entirely on your device.

Give your photo a little more room

If the photo is right but the dimensions are wrong, AI outpainting is worth trying before cutting away part of the image.

Try Photo Extender with a photo you already have, choose a new ratio, and see how a different frame changes what you can do with it.

What would you extend first: a product shot, a social post, or a wallpaper?
