Give Your AI Planner an Exclusion List Before Asking for Ideas

An AI-generated suggestion can sound attractive while violating the most important part of your request.

A wardrobe plan might introduce clothes you do not own. A gift shortlist might include something the recipient has explicitly said they do not want.

One way to make the task easier to inspect is to separate exclusions from preferences before asking for ideas.

Create three lists

Start with “Must satisfy.” These are requirements every suggestion needs to meet.

Next, write “Must exclude.” These are boundaries that should eliminate a suggestion.

Finally, add “Nice to have.” These preferences can help choose between otherwise acceptable options.

For a wardrobe exercise, the lists might look like this:

Must satisfy:
• Use only the five garments listed below.
• Include the flat shoes I already own.

Must exclude:
• New purchases.
• The blue shirt, which is currently being washed.

Nice to have:
• Include a green accent.

The important distinction is that a green accent is optional. Using an unavailable shirt is a failure.

The prompt

“Use the requirements, exclusions, preferences, and available options below to propose up to three plans.

Before generating plans, check whether any requirements conflict. If they do, explain the conflict and ask one focused question. Do not silently relax a requirement.

For each plan:

List the exact items used.

Explain how it meets each requirement.

Check it against every exclusion.

Identify any preference it does not meet.

Do not invent items or assume missing details. If fewer than three valid plans exist, return fewer than three.

End with a short list of details I should verify myself.”

Apply the same structure to gift planning

For a gift exercise, supply a shortlist you have already collected.

A requirement might be that the item fits in the recipient’s existing storage box. An exclusion might be anything requiring an account or recurring payment. A preference might be reusable packaging.

If dimensions or activation requirements are missing, the assistant should mark them as unknown. It should not treat an appealing description as proof that the gift qualifies.

Use references to improve the inputs

You can consult Fashion.cc’s wardrobe guides when deciding which clothing details to record. The Popular Gift guides can provide starting points for building a gift shortlist.

Bring the relevant details into the prompt yourself instead of assuming the assistant has read a linked page.

Test the boundary

Add one deliberately unsuitable option to your list: an unavailable garment or a gift that requires a subscription.

Check whether the assistant excludes it and explains why. If it includes the option anyway, revise the instructions before relying on the rest of the suggestions.

The aim is a small set of inspectable choices. A shorter answer that respects your boundaries is more useful than a longer list you must rebuild.
