What I Learned From Using a Free Post-Quantum VPN

I have always thought of VPNs as one of those tools that are useful to have but easy to overthink. Most of the time, I just want something that can give me an additional layer of privacy when I'm browsing, particularly when I'm connected to a public or unfamiliar network. I have tried free VPN services before, but I've often found myself questioning the speed, limitations, or how much of the service is actually usable without paying.

Recently, I started using the free version of OllaVPN, mainly because I was curious about its focus on post-quantum cryptography (PQC). That was different from the usual reason I see people choosing a VPN. Instead of only focusing on changing an IP address or accessing another region, OllaVPN puts quite a bit of emphasis on preparing VPN security for future cryptographic challenges.

After spending some time using it, I thought the experience was worth writing about—not as a "best VPN" recommendation, but simply because the technology behind it is interesting.

My first impression

The actual process of using OllaVPN isn't particularly complicated. That's something I appreciated.

When I hear terms such as post-quantum cryptography, I initially expect to encounter a complicated interface filled with security settings. In practice, I don't need to understand the cryptographic details just to connect. The technical work happens behind the scenes, while the user experience remains relatively familiar.

For me, that's how security software should ideally work. The underlying technology can be complicated without forcing the person using it to become an expert.

I mainly use the free version for everyday browsing. I'm not using it for huge file transfers or anything that requires maximum bandwidth. My typical use is browsing websites, checking online services, reading articles, and occasionally connecting through networks where I would rather have an additional layer of protection.

Why post-quantum cryptography caught my attention

The term "post-quantum" sounds a little intimidating at first, but the basic reason for it is fairly easy to understand.

A lot of today's digital security relies on cryptographic algorithms. As quantum computing develops, sufficiently powerful quantum computers could potentially create new challenges for some of the cryptographic systems currently in use.

That doesn't mean our existing internet security is suddenly broken. Instead, security researchers and engineers are working ahead of time on algorithms designed to remain secure in a future where quantum computing becomes more capable.

That's where post-quantum cryptography comes into the picture.

What I found interesting about OllaVPN is that it uses a hybrid approach, combining established cryptographic techniques with post-quantum key exchange technology. From a normal user's perspective, I don't have to manually configure this. It's part of the connection process.

I like that approach because it makes a fairly advanced security concept accessible without turning the VPN into a research project for the person using it.

What the free plan is like

The free version is obviously not designed to compete with a premium VPN when it comes to bandwidth and device limits.

The free plan has a 10 Mbps speed limit and supports one device at a time. For me, that's acceptable because my VPN usage is mostly ordinary browsing. Someone who regularly downloads very large files, streams high-resolution content, or wants to connect several devices at once might find those restrictions more noticeable.

I think this is something people should understand before choosing any free VPN. "Free" doesn't necessarily mean there are no limitations.

In my case, the free plan has been enough to let me actually test the service and see whether I like the experience before considering whether I would need anything beyond it.

Security features matter beyond the VPN connection

One thing I look at with VPN software is what happens when something goes wrong.

A VPN connection can occasionally disconnect. If that happens, I don't want my device to quietly fall back to the ordinary internet connection without me knowing.

OllaVPN includes a kill switch, which is designed to help prevent traffic from continuing outside the VPN connection if the tunnel drops. I find this more useful than some of the flashy features that VPN services sometimes advertise because it addresses a practical situation.

DNS handling is another area I pay attention to. DNS requests happen constantly in the background, and they are easy to forget about when thinking about VPN privacy. OllaVPN uses DNS through the VPN tunnel, which adds another part to the protected connection.

These features don't mean that I'm completely anonymous online, but they are useful components of a broader privacy setup.

A VPN isn't the same thing as anonymity

This is probably worth mentioning because VPN advertising can sometimes create unrealistic expectations.

A VPN doesn't make you invisible.

If I sign into an online account, the service can still know that I'm using that account. A VPN also won't protect me from clicking a malicious link, installing malware, using a weak password, or giving away personal information myself.

I still need to use strong passwords, two-factor authentication, updated software, and basic caution when browsing.

For me, the best way to think about a VPN is as one additional layer of privacy and network security.

That distinction is important because it keeps expectations realistic.

What I found most interesting after using it

The biggest thing I took away from using OllaVPN isn't actually the VPN connection itself. It's the idea that post-quantum cryptography is gradually moving from something I mostly encountered in technical discussions into products that ordinary users can actually experiment with.

Before trying it, PQC felt like a distant cybersecurity topic. I knew it was becoming important, but I didn't really think about how it could eventually affect everyday applications.

Using a VPN that incorporates a post-quantum approach made the subject feel much more tangible.

It also made me think about how security usually evolves. We don't wait for every possible problem to happen before improving systems. We prepare for vulnerabilities, update algorithms, and replace older technologies as new threats emerge.

Post-quantum cryptography is part of that same general process.

Would I keep using the free version?

For my current needs, yes.

I don't need unlimited bandwidth or several simultaneous VPN connections, so the restrictions on the free version haven't been a major problem for me. What I value more is being able to use a VPN that is experimenting with newer security technology while still keeping the basic experience straightforward.

That doesn't mean I think everyone needs a post-quantum VPN immediately, or that OllaVPN is the answer to every online privacy problem. Choosing a VPN depends on what someone actually needs, including speed, locations, device support, privacy policies, and compatibility.

For me, though, it has been an interesting service to try because it combines something familiar—a VPN—with a security concept that is becoming increasingly relevant.

The important thing is to treat it as one part of your overall security habits rather than assuming that a VPN alone can solve every privacy problem.
