Edit a Gift Note with AI Without Inventing a Shared History

A short gift note can become strangely elaborate when an AI assistant tries to make it “more personal.”

A simple congratulations may turn into a story about years of friendship. A practical gift may become “the perfect expression of everything we have been through.”

If you did not supply those details, they do not belong in the note.

Give the assistant a small set of facts

Before asking for a rewrite, record four things:

• The occasion
• Your relationship to the recipient
• Why you chose the gift
• The tone you would naturally use

Add a genuine memory only if you want it included. A warm note does not require one.

For example:

“Housewarming. A colleague I know mainly through work. A plain notebook because they mentioned setting up a desk at home. Friendly and brief.”

That is enough material for a modest message. It is not evidence of a close friendship or a shared experience outside work.

The prompt

“Edit my gift note using only the facts and draft below.

Preserve my intended meaning and level of familiarity. Do not invent memories, preferences, emotions, promises, or relationship history.

Write three versions:

  1. Under 25 words
  2. Under 45 words
  3. A light edit that stays close to my original wording

Avoid claims such as ‘I know you’ll love this’ unless I supplied a clear reason to use them.

Do not add requests for a photo, public reaction, thank-you message, or future invitation.

After the drafts, list any wording that depends on an assumption. Keep that list outside the notes.”

A worked example

Original draft:

“Congratulations on the new place. You mentioned making a desk area, so I thought this notebook might be useful.”

Possible short version:

“Congratulations on your new place! A little notebook for the desk area you mentioned. Hope you enjoy settling in.”

The edit keeps the known connection between the gift and the desk. It does not invent a favorite writing habit or describe a home the sender has never visited.

Check every personal claim

Read the proposed note sentence by sentence.

Could you comfortably explain where each detail came from? Does the wording sound like something you would say? Has the assistant made the relationship sound closer than it is?

Delete a sentence when its emotional weight exceeds what you meant.

For occasion context, the Popular Gift occasion guides offer starting points across different gifting situations. Use that context to consider the setting; supply the personal facts yourself.

Finish by reading the note aloud. Keep the version that sounds natural in your voice, even if it is the shortest one.
