The building blocks of an image prompt

Build the picture around one subject and one action. Each extra field should answer a different visual question. If your subject is a lighthouse keeper climbing stairs, describe the stairs and the light before adding decorative adjectives. That gives you a scene you can revise deliberately.

ElementWhat it controlsExample
SubjectThe main thing to depictA lighthouse keeper
Action or detailsPose, movement and identifying featuresClimbing a spiral staircase
SettingPlace and surrounding conditionsInside a stone lighthouse during a storm
Style or mediumThe visual treatmentCinematic film still
LightingLight direction and characterLow-key dramatic lighting
Shot or compositionFraming and viewpointLow angle
LensThe photographic look you request35mm lens
MoodThe intended emotional toneTense, lonely
Color paletteThe colors to emphasizeDeep teal and amber

A lens description is a creative instruction, not a promise of optical accuracy. Keep it when you want a photographic treatment and remove it when it adds nothing to a flat illustration. Empty fields disappear from the assembled prompt.

Choose tags or natural language for your model

Tag-style prompts suit SD 1.5, SDXL and their fine-tunes. These models use CLIP text encoders and read prompts in chunks of 75 tokens. Earlier terms tend to carry more weight, so place the essential subject and action before minor texture details. The word count above is not a token count.

Pony expects score_9, score_8_up, score_7_up first. Illustrious and NoobAI use booru-style tags and respond to masterpiece, best quality, absurdres. Select the matching family to add its prefix. The builder lowercases and removes repeated tags; it does not look up or invent tags for your subject.

Natural-language sentences suit Flux and other models with a T5 or LLM text encoder. Use that format for the prose workflow described in the Flux prompting guide. For Midjourney, the Midjourney prompt generator adds aspect ratio and other parameters after your description.

How to use the image prompt generator

  1. Replace the example subject and action with a specific scene. Use concrete nouns such as brass lantern and wet stone steps.
  2. Choose one medium, then add lighting and a viewpoint that fit it. Read the scene aloud to catch conflicting instructions.
  3. Choose natural language or tags. In tag mode, choose the model family and review the prefix before copying.
  4. Generate an image in your chosen app, then change the field that corresponds to the result you want to adjust.

If a Stable Diffusion interface needs a different weighting syntax, use the prompt weight converter after deciding which detail needs emphasis. First make sure the ordinary wording clearly states that detail.

Keep the positive prompt focused

Avoid asking for an oil painting, a studio photograph and a flat vector drawing in the same scene unless that mixture is deliberate. Likewise, ten near-identical adjectives make it harder for you to identify which instruction matters. Replace vague praise with a material, position, color or light source you can actually inspect.

Describe what you want to see in the positive prompt. For models that support exclusions, move unwanted defects into a separate negative prompt instead of mixing them into the subject description. Add an exclusion after you observe the problem, and compare the next result before expanding the list.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write a good AI image prompt?

Start with the subject and what it is doing, then describe the setting and one clear style. Add lighting and framing that support the scene. Leave out details that do not affect the picture you want.

Should I use tags or full sentences for image prompts?

Use comma-separated tags for SD 1.5, SDXL and their fine-tunes. Natural-language sentences suit Flux and other models with a T5 or LLM text encoder. This builder lets you switch formats without retyping the scene.

What quality tags does Pony Diffusion XL use?

Pony Diffusion XL fine-tunes expect score_9, score_8_up, score_7_up at the beginning of the positive prompt. Select Pony in tag mode to add them. Put lower score tags in the negative prompt instead.

What tags should I use for Illustrious or NoobAI?

Use booru-style tags with quality terms such as masterpiece, best quality, absurdres. The Illustrious / NoobAI option adds those quality tags first. Write the remaining fields as tags yourself, since the builder does not translate prose into a booru vocabulary.

Does this free image prompt generator create images?

No, it assembles the details you enter into prompt text in your browser. Copy the result into your image generator to create the image. It does not send your scene to an AI model.
